How to Stand Out as a Recent Graduate: Tips for Applying to UT’s Online MSCS Program

March 11, 2025

Demand for computer scientists is soaring as businesses and individuals increasingly require newer, better technology that uses the latest techniques and tools; need is particularly strong in areas surrounding artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning. As a recent college graduate, earning a master’s degree in computer science can help you stand out in a competitive job market and qualify for more senior (and higher-paying) jobs faster. A master’s also boosts your earning potential; a recent American Enterprise Institute study calculated an average lifetime return on investment of over $800,000 for a computer science master’s.

The University of Tennessee (UT) online Master of Science in Computer Science (MSCS) program enables recent graduates to earn their advanced degrees 100 percent online while working full-time. Students can study from anywhere without having to relocate, and they benefit from opportunities to apply what they learn in the classroom immediately to their real-world professional lives.

The first step toward earning an advanced degree is submitting a strong graduate school application. Continue reading for tips on how recent graduates can strengthen their MSCS applications even without a resume reflecting extensive work experience.

Understanding the Admission Requirements: What Do You Need to Apply to an MS in Computer Science?

Candidates for the UT online MSCS program must meet specific academic requirements and submit a complete program application to be considered for admission.

Computer Science Prerequisites

To qualify for admission to the UT online MSCS program, you must have a bachelor’s degree in computer science, computer engineering or a related discipline, with a minimum undergraduate GPA of 3.0 (3.3 for international students). You must also have completed the following prerequisite coursework:

  • Two semesters of calculus (although one can suffice if all other criteria are met)
  • Coursework and/or extensive professional experience in the following
    programming languages: Python, C, C++
  • Systems programming coursework or experience (typically coursework in computer organization and operating systems)
  • Data structures and algorithms coursework or experience

Application Materials

If you meet the application requirements, you may create an account through the UT online application system to submit your application. Your application should include the following materials:

  • A two to three-page personal statement
  • Transcripts from each institution attended, even if a degree was not conferred
  • An updated resume
  • An optional statement of purpose for additional context (required for applicants with an undergraduate GPA below 3.0)
  • Letters of recommendation (required for students using experience instead of formal computer science course work to qualify; optional for others)

If you lack extensive professional experience, you will need to highlight other accomplishments to bolster your application. Continue reading to learn more about actionable strategies to help recent graduates build a compelling application.

Leveraging Your Academic Achievements as a Recent Graduate

As a recent graduate, you likely won’t have many years of industry experience to spotlight in your application. However, you will have recent academic achievements. Make the most of your application by highlighting relevant coursework that could enable you to excel in an MSCS program. For example, if you performed well in your computer science courses or have taken any specialized or advanced coursework during your bachelor’s studies, make sure you point this out. Showcase specific academic projects—such as a capstone or portfolio project—that demonstrate your programming, data, or other relevant skills.

Highlighting Practical Experience Without Formal Employment

Having little or no professional experience doesn’t mean you don’t have relevant practical experience. Highlight all your relevant accomplishments, including practical projects completed as part of your bachelor’s degree, internships (paid or unpaid), contributions to open-source projects, and volunteer work.

To strengthen your application further, create a portfolio demonstrating your practical skills and initiative. For example, you could build a website to demonstrate your front-end development skills or create a GitHub compilation to showcase your coding skills.

Crafting a Compelling Personal Statement

Use your personal statement to showcase your understanding of the program and how it complements your career goals. You can make your personal statement even more compelling by discussing your recent academic and extracurricular experiences and how they have prepared you for the demands of graduate study.

Securing Strong Letters of Recommendation

Submitting letters of recommendation, while optional, is strongly recommended. Recommendations can significantly strengthen your application. Request letters from professors, mentors, or advisors with first-hand knowledge of your academic strengths and abilities.

When approaching potential recommenders, provide them with information about the program you’re targeting and explain why you would like to pursue this specific degree. You can also ask your recommenders for tips and advice on preparing for graduate school.

Preparing for the Graduate School Application Process

The graduate school application process can feel overwhelming. However, by starting early, you can significantly reduce your stress.

Like any process, applying for graduate school can be made easier by taking a methodical approach and starting well before the deadline. Get an early start on gathering your application materials and drafting your statements. Also, budget time to get feedback from peers or mentors and implement any worthwhile suggestions.

If you are still enrolled in your undergraduate program while planning your application, explore any university resources available to help you apply to graduate school. You may have access to application advising services or a career office.

Don’t let a lack of work experience deter you from enrolling in a graduate computer science program. You can still build a robust application by emphasizing your academic achievements, practical projects, and portfolios.
